Andrea Cecile Cohen

Andrea Cecile Cohen, creator of number 35, has always shown an active interest in fashion and tailoring.

Growing up in Yorkshire, Andrea Cecile Cohen spent many a summer holiday working in her grandfather’s menswear factory which manufactured for companies such as Burberry and Burtons. Key to her understanding of what made a perfectly tailored garment was watching the quality controllers nitpick over the smallest detail to ensure that the finished product left the factory faultless. She also helped out at her mother’s ladies wear store, and these two defining experiences proved to be a great asset in developing her passion for clothing and retail.

On completion of her school career, Andrea Cecile Cohen attended Leeds College of Art where she studied surface pattern design after which she moved to London to take up a position at luxury emporium Fortnum & Mason of Piccadilly.

In 1985 Andrea joined retailing giant Next, the brainchild of George Davies, in its newly formed Interiors division where she rapidly moved up the ranks, running the company’s flagship interiors department in Kensington High Street, as well as its restaurant.

Headhunted four years later by luxury bathroom and fragrance brand Czech & Speake of Jermyn Street, Andrea headed up the company’s retail and sales division. For Andrea the company embodied the key elements of superlative customer relations offering clients a bespoke and highly personalised shopping experience.

Following a successful four years with Czech & Speake,  Andrea was approached by leading Dutch bed manufacturer Royal Auping – a Royal Warrant holder in the Netherlands – to launch the company’s UK division. It had recently launched the super luxurious ‘Royal’ automated bed range which Andrea considered “the best bed in the world” and an excellent vehicle for promoting Royal Auping to a UK audience. Within three years of building the brand to a high level in the domestic market she was offered the role of Managing Director.

In 2004 while on a business trip in Europe, Andrea came up with the concept for number 35. For some time she had grown immensely aware of the uninspiring and ill-fitting offerings available for modern business women on the high street and in department stores. Using this as her spur, Andrea vowed to create a brand with great styling, luxurious fabrics and tailoring that would celebrate the female form and offer professional women an inner sense of wellbeing and confidence in the working environment.

Back in the UK, Andrea left Royal Auping to start work on number 35. Within ten months she had learnt the art of how to design, pattern cut and source fabrics and, by 2005, had opened her very first showroom in Highgate, London. A further showroom followed in 2008 on Fulham Road, Chelsea.

In 2013 Andrea began an exciting collaboration with Dan Lawson, acclaimed Emmy® nominated costume designer for popular CBS show, The Good Wife. Together they created the new 35DL online ready-to-wear collection on sale now in both the UK and US. Soon after 35.DL launched, Andrea and her team needed a larger, more creative environment in which to grow the business. Andrea also wanted to be able to focus more on her City clients so decided to say a fond farewell to Chelsea and embrace a new vibrant studio in Clerkenwell Green.
